Massage and Wellness
My philosophy on massage therapy is that it is about "wellness" and encompasses far more than just the absence of dis-ease in the body.  Wellness has been defined as ...
*A dimension of health beyond the absence of disease or infirmity, including social, emotional and spiritual health.
*An interactive process of becoming aware of and practicing healthy choices to create a more successful and balanced lifestyle.
*The condition of good physical and mental health, especially when maintained by proper diet, exercise and habits.

In other words, wellness is about wholeness and healing on ALL levels of being.
"Human beings are bodies, minds and spirits.  Health necessarily involves all of those components and any program intended to improve health must address all of them."  --Andrew Weil, M.D. (8 Weeks to Optimum Health)
Massage therapy can and does address all three of these aspects.  For instance, you may come into a session seeking relief from tight and painful muscles yet leave with a more relaxed, open, peaceful and calm state of mind, as well.  Clients often note a greater sense of feeling connected to their own selves and the world, after a session.
"Wholeness or health is our natural state.  The nature of healing involves removing obstructions to this natural state and bringing individuals into alignment with themselves and their world ...."  --Richard Carlson, Ph.D.

"Unlike much of orthodox medicine, alternative approaches to healing typically honor the wisdom and capability of the human body.  Their goal is often to support and strengthen the powerful healing forces already at work within us."  --John Robbins (Reclaiming Our Health)

Massage can also play a preventative role by increasing our awareness to avoid future problems.  In today's overly busy and stress-full world, we all have a tendency to "live in our heads" and often don't notice our bodies until they are screaming at us in the voice of pain!  By becoming more aware or conscious of things like poor posture, shoulders that are bunched up around our ears and our "stiff necks," we can more easily correct these habits before they lead to more serious and chronic conditions.

Rather than a luxury, massage therapy should be considered a vital part of Self-care that can restore a sense of balance and harmony to our lives that has long been missing!
